ARTIST BIO
Luka Amaru Fernandez (b. 2000 in San Jose, CA) is a US-Peruvian painter based in San Francisco. Raised in Latin America, he attended an arts oriented public high school in Argentina and started his professional career doing commission work in his teens. After migrating back to the US as an adult, he began working as an art instructor and started exploring his personal artistic voice while getting involved in the local art community. In 2026 he completed a year-long teaching fellowship at Root Division and still remains there as a studio artist. His work has been exhibited at Juan R. Fuentes Gallery, Queer Arts Featured, Faultline Artspace, and Rosebud Gallery.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings make use of textured surfaces and solid oil-based materials, creating the illusion of static, stippling, or faux-pointillism contrasting with large expanses of flat color. I draw from a variety of influences including Latin American Surrealism, modern art movements, and pre-hispanic Andean art. The subjects of my work are symbolic domestic spaces inhabited by anthropomorphized chimeras and mysterious entities. These interiors and characters emerge from a place of processing mestizo identity, decolonizing queerness, and embracing cultural multiplicities.
